The Show and Sale is an opportunity for 4-H participants to learn about raising livestock including feeding, health maintenance, record keeping, showing, and selling. The profits earned through this program are used to fund future projects as well as future education. It is with support from people like you that make this program possible.
Market steers will be sent to a packer for the carcass contest. Buyers wishing to resell their purchases will be paid on a carcass grade and yield basis by the packer. Local delivery can also be arranged for the carcasses processed at the packer for a small slaughtering/processing fee.
All other animals will be resold on Tuesday, May 7th at the Fauquier Livestock Exchange UNLESS hauling/processing arrangements have been made prior to the sale by the buyer.
At the end of the sale we will be selling a market hog to benefit the Susan P. Rucker Show and Sale Scholarship Fund. Proceeds from this sale benefit the graduating 4-H seniors who have 3+ consecutive years as an active member of the Livestock Club, Farm Tails, Mountainside Livestock, or Beef and Boer Goat 4-H Clubs.
Financial Aspects
Prices paid by the buyer are generally higher than current market prices. Following are examples of Monday night purchases and Tuesday’s resale:
Steer
- Monday Night 1200 lbs @ $3.00 = $3,600
- Tuesday Auction 1200 lbs @ $1.30 = $1,560
- Net Cost to Buyer $2,040
Hog
- Monday Night 240 lbs @ $3.00 = $720
- Tuesday Auction 240 lbs @ $0.60 = $144
- Net Cost to Buyer $576
Note: Animals sold Tuesday, May 8th at the Fauquier Livestock Exchange will incur a minimal fee for the sale process.
You have many other options for the market animal you purchase including your own freezer, sharing with family, business gifts, and/or donations. Your butcher can help you decide how to process the meat according to your individual needs and likes.
